About Artist

Santana Gohain (born 1996, Dibrugarh, Assam) is a contemporary printmaker whose practice is rooted in an intensive engagement with surface, texture, and material memory. She graduated with a First Class distinction in Printmaking from the Government College of Art and Crafts, Guwahati, and subsequently completed a Post-Diploma in Printmaking from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (MSU), Vadodara.

Working through a labour-intensive process, Gohain builds densely layered surfaces that operate within an abstract visual language. Her compositions, while materially rich, remain restrained in palette and quietly evocative inviting prolonged contemplation rather than immediate interpretation.

Her artistic sensibility is deeply informed by childhood experiences and an early immersion in mark-making. Born in Dibrugarh and raised across the mist-laden hills of Meghalaya and the valleys of Guwahati, Gohain’s formative years were shaped by a familial environment that encouraged creativity and visual exploration. Early encounters with ancient scripts, cave drawings, and primal mark-making continue to inform her approach to abstraction.

Through her advanced training in printmaking at MSU, Gohain developed a rigorous understanding of surface-making techniques. Her exposure to the vibrant textile traditions of Gujarat, alongside the industrial landscape surrounding her studio, has further expanded her material vocabulary resulting in works that negotiate the space between the rustic and the contemporary.

Gohain has participated in several solo and group exhibitions with leading galleries in India and internationally, including presentations in New Jersey and San Francisco. A recipient of art fellowships, she has also taken part in numerous workshops and art camps. Each body of work reflects an ongoing journey of personal inquiry, material experimentation, and a sustained commitment to abstraction as a mode of expression.
