Shuvaprasanna

Shuvaprasanna (b. 1947, Kolkata) is one of Bengal’s most prominent contemporary artists, renowned for his vivid portrayals of Kolkata’s many moods. He graduated from the Indian College of Art (R.B. University, Kolkata)in 1969 and has since built a distinguished career as a painter, printmaker, and mixed-media artist.

The city of Kolkata, its vibrancy and decay, violence and vulnerability has remained the central muse of his practice. Shuvaprasanna transforms these urban experiences into compositions that balance stark reality with a dreamlike, often surreal intensity. Working across oil on canvas, charcoal, and mixed media, he achieves a precise, finely wrought style that heightens the emotional charge of his subjects.

His work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions across India and abroad, his paintings have also appeared at international auctions, notably with Abode sold at Waddington’s Fine Prints & Photography Auction (2014). Among his many accolades are awards from the Birla Academy of Art and Culture(1977), the State Lalit Kala Akademi, West Bengal (1978), and the All-India Fine Arts and Crafts Society, New Delhi (1979).
